Sportsbook Hold Calculator: How Much Margin Is Built Into This Market

The sportsbook margin is the amount by which the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market add up to more than 100%, and the payout rate is its inverse. On a soccer 3-way moneyline at +110 (2.10) home, +240 (3.40) draw and +260 (3.60) away, the implied probabilities total 104.8%: a 4.8% margin and a 95.4% payout rate. The sportsbook hold calculator handles two- and three-way markets, so you can compare the spread, the total and the 3-way moneyline on the same game and see which costs less.

How to use the sportsbook hold calculator

Enter the odds for every outcome in a market. For a two-way market such as a spread or a total, fill A and B; for a three-way market such as a soccer moneyline with the draw, add C. The calculator returns the margin and the payout rate.

The difference from the vig calculator is the number of outcomes. The vig calculator handles two-way markets and returns fair odds; the hold calculator handles two or three outcomes and is built for comparing bet types. Run the spread, the total and the 3-way moneyline on the same game and you will see which one the book prices most tightly.

The payout rate expresses the same margin from the bettor's side: a 4.8% margin equals a 95.4% payout rate, meaning that over the long run the market returns $95.40 for every $100 wagered on it.

Why three-way markets usually carry a higher margin

The more outcomes a market has, the easier it is for the sportsbook to tuck a little margin into each one without bettors noticing. A soccer 3-way moneyline often carries one to three points more margin than the spread on the same game, and a correct-score market with a dozen or more outcomes can run above 15%.

So if you simply like one team, compare the margin on the spread, the moneyline and any alternate markets before choosing where to bet. Standard -110 (1.91) two-way pricing carries a 4.76% margin; anything well above that deserves a second look.

Example: soccer 3-way moneyline at +110 (2.10) / +240 (3.40) / +260 (3.60)

  1. Implied probabilities: 1 ÷ 2.10 = 47.6%, 1 ÷ 3.40 = 29.4%, 1 ÷ 3.60 = 27.8%.
  2. Total 104.8%; margin 4.8%.
  3. Payout rate = 1 ÷ 1.048 = 95.4%.

If the spread on the same match is -111 (1.90) on both sides, its margin is 5.3%, so here the 3-way moneyline is actually the cheaper market. That runs against the usual rule that three-way markets cost more, which is why you should calculate every market rather than assume.

FAQ

Is sportsbook margin the same as vig?+

It is the same concept: the amount by which the implied probabilities of all outcomes exceed 100%. By convention bettors say vig or juice for two-way markets like spreads and totals, and margin or hold for markets with three or more outcomes.

What is the payout rate?+

Payout rate = 1 ÷ (1 + margin). It is the share of total wagers the market returns to bettors over the long run. A 4.8% margin corresponds to a 95.4% payout rate; standard -110 pricing on both sides corresponds to about 95.5%.

What is a typical sportsbook hold in the US?+

On a single balanced market at -110 both sides the hold is about 4.5% of handle. Actual hold is higher: the 2025 US average was 10.4% per the Covers tracker, and New Jersey books kept about 20% of parlay handle in 2025 against 5% on other bets.

How high is too high a margin?+

Standard two-way pricing at -110 carries a 4.76% margin, and reduced-juice books go lower. Three-way markets commonly run 5% to 8%. Markets above 10% are very hard to beat over the long run because your edge has to exceed the margin.

Should I avoid high-margin markets entirely?+

Not necessarily, but your win-probability estimate has to beat the market by more than the margin. Use the expected value calculator with the actual price you are offered and only bet if EV is still positive after the margin is accounted for.
